Learn Luxembourgish

“It’s a beautiful thing when you realize that the words in another language are not just translations, but contain stories passed on from generation to generation”.

Liz Wegner is the founder of www.learnluxembourgish.com, an online platform that strives to help people learn Luxembourgish. Not only does she perceive language as communication means, but she also highlights the deep social, historical and cultural aspect of words.

Due to the geographic location of Luxembourg, there is a multicultural landscape where languages with a higher number of speakers – namely French and German, may reduce the reach and preservation of Luxembourgish. Luxembourgish schoolchildren first learn German, then French, and finally, English in their early teens.

Liz welcomes the idea of Luxembourgish becoming the only official language: “It is the only language that defines our nation, the language that includes our historic, cultural and social footprint.”
