Spanish Science Drag
We are celebrating European Drag Queens! The Spanish Drag Queen, Sassy Science, is using her drag to empower underrepresented groups in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
“Hi there! I’m Mario, but you can call me Sassy (or Dr Science if you're on fire). In my daily job, I am a postdoctoral researcher studying new or interesting materials using electron microscopy, which I hope will result in better knowledge about these materials and their applications in devices that might be used in the future!
From very early on in my academic career, as a bisexual and non-binary person - something we don't see too often in STEM (especially in physics) - I have been very aware that underrepresented groups in STEM need more spaces where their voices are not just heard, but listened to.
Around that time, my Marie-Slodowska Curie innovative training network (shoutout to my former project, Enabling Excellence), provided me and my peers with the tools to start designing a scicomm project, which is how The SassyScience Project was born.
This project aims to use drag, and everything it entails, to try to empower different underrepresented groups in STEM, with its focus set on women and LGBTIQA+ people, which is currently the main public of drag as an art form.
If this is something you're interested in, come check it out! But bear in mind this is not my job, so I'm not the most stable content creator out there!”
